5 Ways to Keep the Kids Entertained in Winter with a Home Theatre
If you have young kids at home, rainy winter days can sometimes be a real challenge when it comes to keeping boredom at bay. As an extra space to relax and entertain, a home cinema can provide a useful setting for a range of fun activities – while keeping your main living area clutter-free.
Here are just a few handy ideas to help you utilise your space in winter (and beyond).
Cosy Up with a Good Movie
If the weather outside is grey and miserable, you’ve got the perfect excuse to cosy up with a good movie. Grab your blankets and pillows to make your home theatre even more comfortable, and set up a snack bar with everyone’s favourites. Kids can ‘pay’ for their snacks by doing household chores, giving them something to work towards.
Enjoy a Game Day
If you need a break from screen time, board games can be the way to go! Having bookcases or entertainment units in your home theatre will allow you to store games, puzzles and books with ease. Some classic games include:
- Monopoly
- Uno
- Scrabble
- Jenga
- Pictionary
Set Up a Craft Table
Fill up a bar cart (or set up a small table) with craft supplies, such as pencils, paper, glue, stickers, washable paints and other items. Set up a station for the kids in the corner of your home theatre, and let their imaginations run wild.
From simple colouring in, to writing stories or creating characters out of recycled items around the home (think egg cartons and milk bottle lids), the possibilities are endless. Plus, if you use the portable bar cart option, you can simply wheel the craft supplies away when everyone’s finished.
Get Moving
Kids bouncing off the walls? There are a few good ways you can use your theatre room to help them release some of that pent-up energy. Here are a few:
- Put an easy-to-follow exercise video up on your TV, and go through the movements together.
- Set up a few mats (or even towels) on the floor and practice a few simple yoga moves.
- Put on some of your favourite songs and have a dance session.
- Do some star jumps, running on the spot, hops and other exercises.
Set Up a Blanket Fort
If you’re getting tired from all that exercise, set up a blanket fort! Use the couches in your theatre room as a base, with blankets and pillows helping to create the ultimate hideaway for kids. This simple activity can keep them entertained for hours – put on a movie for them, or let them take in a book or two into their fort.
