8 Ways to Prepare your Kitchen for the Holiday Season
We’ve got eight helpful ways for you to get started, so you can then focus on making the most of every moment. Take a look!
1. Clear out your Cupboards
With a lot of activity on the horizon, organising your kitchen will help to take away some of that holiday stress. Things like sorting out your storage containers to make sure everything has a lid (handy for leftovers), organising your pots and pans to make them easily accessible, making sure you have enough bin bags, paper towel and other necessities, and giving your silverware a bit of a polish.
2. Do an Inventory of your Grocery Items
The holiday season involves a lot of eating and drinking, so you’ll want to make sure you have the space to fit everything in. Start off by doing an inventory of your current grocery items, which means going through your fridge, freezer and pantry.
Use up any items that might expire soon, or get rid of anything that is well past its sell-by date. While you check your items, it’s also a great time to wipe down shelves and sort out storage at the same time.
Once you’ve checked what items you have, you can then set about preparing a grocery list. Look out for specials on canned goods and other long-lasting items, or freeze things ahead of time to make things easier.
3. Style your Kitchen
Adding a little festive cheer to your kitchen can go a long way. Consider things like table settings, napkins, plates and other items. If you have the space, you can add a mini Christmas tree to your table, or add some candles to really set the mood.
4. Clean your Appliances
Your oven, microwave and other appliances in your favourite kitchen, work hard all year, so they deserve a good clean before the demands of the holiday season. It’s also a good time to check that your dishwasher is running smoothly (if you have one), and your outdoor BBQ has plenty of gas for those outdoor feasts.
5. Sharpen your Knives
There’s nothing worse than trying to chop or carve with knives that just won’t cut it. Spend some time sharpening your knives, either with a whetstone or a trusty knife sharpener. Once you’re satisfied, make sure to store your knives correctly to keep those edges nice and sharp.
6. Plan your Meals
Whether you bookmark holiday recipe tabs online, or get together some of your tried and trusted cookbooks, it always pays to plan ahead when it comes to holiday cooking. By planning your meals, you can also help to stick to a budget and make sure you have enough food to go around (without things going to waste).
7. Check your Spices
Spices play a leading role in many holiday meals. Here are just a few spices you might want to keep topped up:
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- Ginger
- Allspice
- Cloves
- Rosemary
- Oregano
- Thyme
Don’t forget to fill up the salt and pepper shakers, too.
8. Make Time to Enjoy
This is the most important part. Once you’ve done all the hard work, make sure to take a moment to reward yourself for a job well done. That might be putting your feet up with a cheeky mince pie, or shaking up a cocktail to share with friends. Whatever you decide – you’ve earned it!
