Tips for navigating a kitchen renovation
At Flexi Renovations, we love all things kitchens, and we’ve proudly helped to bring people’s kitchen dreams to life across Perth. Our experience also means we know everything there is to know about getting your home ready for building works. Here are just a few of our tips to help you stay organised..
Pick your Season
Before you start your kitchen renovation works, it’s important to be prepared. When packing up your kitchen, it pays to start early by storing away some of your lesser-used items. It’s also a great time to do a spring clean of your space as a whole, with kitchen cupboards usually home to appliances and utensils that can be passed on to new owners.
Whatever you do, just make sure to keep all your storage boxes clearly labelled and sorted, to make it easy for you to transfer your belongings to your new kitchen. You’ll thank yourself for this later!
Create a Separate Mini Kitchen
Before work gets underway, make sure to create a separate kitchen space with all the essentials. These include:
- Your fridge and freezer
- Daily groceries
- Basic appliances (kettle, toaster, air fryer, coffee machine, microwave)
- A station for you to set up meals
- Cutlery, plates, mugs and glasses
- Big buckets and washing-up liquid for the dishes, plus a drying station
Our Flexi team will also provide you with a temporary top board in your kitchen between installation of your new cabinets and benchtop. During this time, you’ll be able to use this as a kitchen station, using an extension cord and power board to run your appliances (kettle, toaster, etc). This will help you to stick to a routine in a space you’re familiar with.
Anything you don’t need during the renovation works, try to store safely away. Kitchen renovations can be dusty work, so the less things you have out, the easier it will be to stay clean.
Plan Meals Ahead
A kitchen renovation means you’ll be without your oven and stovetop. With this in mind, it’s incredibly helpful to plan and cook some meals in advance and freeze them. Simply stock up on plastic containers and label each meal as you go along. That way, when you need to get lunch or dinner on the table, you can just grab a few frozen meals and microwave them. Too easy!
Cover your Furniture
Drop sheets, plastic sheeting, or even your old towels can come in very handy during a kitchen renovation. Like we said earlier, building works can be very dusty, and you might be surprised how far this dust can travel.
While sweeping and vacuuming the mess each day will go a long way, you can go a step further by covering your furniture to help keep the dust at bay. If you have the space, also consider moving things in the vicinity into other rooms.
Keep your Eye on the Prize
Things can sometimes get a little stressful during a renovation project – so make sure to keep your eye on the prize. By looking ahead to the future, you can treat the building works as little more than a short disruption, and instead focus your energy on enjoying your new kitchen. Don’t forget to take progress photos along the way, so you can see how far you’ve come!.
