Tips to Create a Minimalist Wardrobe
If you’ve got more clothes than hanging space, it might be time to consider a minimalist approach.
With a collective move towards more sustainable living, minimalist (or capsule) wardrobes are becoming more and more popular. The idea is to cut down on fast fashion and invest in clothes and accessories that are made to last (while giving you more space to enjoy them).
Take Stock of Your Wardrobe Items
Right, it’s time to fling open those wardrobe doors, or head into your walk in robe to do some serious stocktaking. Pull everything out, from shoes, to accessories, hangers and your clothes themselves. Put them on your bed, hang them on a clothes rack or pile them on your floor – just make sure your wardrobe is fully emptied before you move to the next step.
Be Ruthless
Those fluffy hangers from your Nan? Time to find a new home. Clothes you haven’t worn in forever, but still cling on to? They deserve a fresh start with someone else. By selling or donating the (quality) clothes, shoes and accessories you no longer wear, you can not only make someone else’s day, but clear some serious space.
It’s important that you don’t just throw out what you no longer want, as that will take away all the sustainable benefits. Don’t feed that landfill!
Plan Your Outfits
Once you’ve started to whittle down your wardrobe, it’s time to plan your outfits. If you’re serious about creating the ultimate capsule wardrobe, you will need to make sure you have the staples. A good place to start is by including:
- Neutral t-shirts
- A timeless jacket or blazer (such as a leather jacket)
- Jeans
- Black pants
- Cardigan (for layering)
- Black dress
The idea is to get the most out of each piece throughout the seasons, so choosing neutral colour palettes will help you to mix and match with ease. It’s also beneficial to stick to natural fibres where possible (such as wool, cotton or linen).
Repeat the Process Again
If you’re loving all the space in your bedroom wardrobes, keep it up! Every three months or so (or at least twice a year), set aside an afternoon to go through the items in your wardrobe afresh. If you haven’t worn something during this time, or it no longer sparks joy, pass it along.
