Working from home has become a part of life for a lot of Perth households. What started as a laptop on the kitchen bench has turned into something more permanent, and the spare room, the end of a hallway or a corner of the living area, everything feels like workspace.

The difference between a space you tolerate and one you enjoy usually comes down to design. Not the desk on its own, but the whole room working together. Storage that keeps the clutter out of sight. A layout that suits the way you work. Finishes that feel calm rather than busy. When those pieces come together you get a home office that is beautifully functional.

Here are some home office design ideas we come back to again, drawn from our custom home office projects across Perth. Below is one from Iluka.

Design the storage first, not the desk

Most home offices fail because the storage is an afterthought. Paperwork piles up, cables tangle, and the room starts to feel smaller than it is. A better approach is to plan the storage as the backbone of the room and let the desk sit within it.

Our contemporary home office in Iluka is a good example. The room is built around integrated wood-look cabinetry that gives you a mix of open shelving and concealed cupboards, so the things you want on display stay out and everything else disappears behind a door. You can see the full project here.

Balance open display with hidden storage

Open shelving is where a home office gets its personality. Books, a few objects, some greenery. The trick is getting the ratio right, so the room feels considered rather than cluttered.

In the Iluka office, glass-front cabinets and a dark splashback add contrast against the lighter shelving, which stops the wall of storage from feeling flat. It is a simple idea done well, and it works in a small footprint.

Give the office a sense of authority

If you take client calls or want the room to feel like a proper workspace, a more considered, executive look goes a long way.

The modern executive office we built in Myaree leans into this. Light wood look cabinetry runs across the room with overhead storage, glass-front display cabinets and open shelving, all arranged to keep the surfaces clear and the room feeling settled. Recessed lighting does the quiet work of making it feel finished. The project is here.

Build around the way you work

There is no single right layout. Someone who works across two screens all day needs something different to someone who spreads out plans and paperwork. Good design starts with how you use the space, then shapes the joinery around it.

Our custom home office in Rivervale was designed this way, with the workspace and storage built in as one so the room flows and nothing feels bolted on. See it here.

Make a study nook feel like part of the home

Not every home office needs its own room. A well designed study nook in the living area, under the stairs or in a wide hallway can do the job, if it is planned properly. Custom shelving and a fitted desktop let you claim a small space, and it keeps the work tucked away when the day is done. Our take on getting more out of tight spaces is worth a read here.

Let the finishes set the mood

The materials you choose decide how the room feels the moment you walk in. Cooler tones and engineered stone read sharper and more contemporary. What matters is that the finishes suit the rest of your home, so the office feels like it belongs, not like a room that was added on.

Real Perth offices, real results

You do not have to take our word for it. One of our customers came to us with a desk area in their apartment that was not very usable, and after the design and install said they were so impressed they would be back to do their wardrobes too. Another asked for a work from home setup with proper storage and a sleek finish and called the result professional and practical. Read more.
